I would love to see a Rack Extension version of AALTO for propellerhead Reason: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_article&article=whats-new
I understand that there might be some limitations in GUI, but personally I would settle for a monophonic version with a MBRS (Mod Bus Routing System/Mod Matrix) instead of the current routing system.
It would be awesome to have that but also with Audio Inputs to the various portions of AALTO such as the Low Pass Gate, the Waveguide Delay, The Filter and the Reverb to process external audio.
Also with both Audio (for CV at audio rate) and CV I/O for various functions so that you could have different instances of AALTO RE modulating each other.
I would even settle with a monophonic version with just the lower portion of AALTO, i.e. the Complex Oscillator, Waveguide/Delay, Filter, Reverb and Output. But with Audio and CV I/O. Seeing as there are lots of modulation sources in Reason already.
Well, here's to hoping anyway. :)
there will be a bug fixing type update (if i remember correctly) after all the soundplane stuff is done for aalto. so i would imagine it will be a while before any extra feature would be added to aalto but at least for now (if you are on osx) there is aaltoverb which sounds great
Sorry, but I'm asking for a Rack Extensions version of AALTO which is propellerheads own native plugin format:
I hear your fair request but I feel like I have too many formats to support already.
The way Rack Extensions do UI, I don't think it's even possible to make anything looking remotely like Aalto in that environment.
Yeah, I'm aware of the UI restriction but I thought that there are more than one way to solve it. Tbh I'd be happy with just the oscillator, gate (lo pass) and waveguide/delay in a unit with audio and cv I/O so that we can use the 'base' to construct our own synths in Reason. You don't even have to call it AALTO, just use the code you already have to acheive these elements.
But if you feel it's too much, I understand that as well. :)
Something like you describe sounds more possible. Thanks for the input.
+1 as this would add a very different and welcome flavor of synthesis to that already in Reason.
Please don't make an AALTO RE.
While the odd mature producer/artist etc who inexplicably has an attachment to Reason might make good use of it, lets face it, the majority of Reason users are, um, not very sophisticated in their tastes and range.
Do you really want the sound of your wonderful design maligned and badly overused by having it show up on a bunch of combnator "techno"? tracks all over sound cloud?
Those people cant tell the difference between the stock sounds and refils and the current RE's anyway.
You might make 20-30 bucks a pop but it will hurt the prestige of the brand.
Sounds arrogant. I know. Kind of is. But it had to be said.
so you think an affordable, easily obtainable cross-platform VSTi capable of running on any modest modern computer should be... elitist?
I perfer to think of it as 'protective' ;-)
I'm not saying Randy shouldn't make some kind of widget for RE for extra revenue, but if AALTO were my invention I wouldn't want to compromise it with Propellerheads' restrictions (and give them 30 points off the top) or overexpose it by making it available to every single Reason user at the press of a button so they can turn it into a novelty effect.
If it could be sold here, outside of the RE store so those Reason users who either already have it or know about it and genuinely want it could use it, and if Randy wanted to adapt it to propellerhead's specs and give them 30 points, then certainly.
Maybe Randy should sell Soundplanes in Best Buy. Just smaller and without the wood. And keep it under $300 but make sure they get no less than 28 points.
go on... give us a car analogy. ferrari/skoda is a good one ;)
I agree with soulfulmedia, at least in the way that users Reason 6 is not so much. Let developers focus on the new version in the normal format, which is waiting for the mass of Aalto users.
"go on... give us a car analogy. ferrari/skoda is a good one ;)"
Its not really apt. To me its more like selling Tibetan Tantric practice manuals at the checkout isle of a grocery chain.
Seriously, what is it with you Reason bashers? Why can't you stay the f*ck away if you don't have anything sensible to say?
Mention Reason and it's a friggin troll magnet, like moths drawn to a flame or something.
It's great to see exode around here. I second even just having a monophonic version of the base synthesis components with CV and IO. The rest could be made up with other reason devices.
Clearly this wouldn't be as playable as Aalto, but there isn't really anything else like it within reason for sound generation.
By the way, I like Reason, but more a desire to give the developer the opportunity to complete the initiated (in the form of a new version, and a lot of people are waiting for this), without burdening it with new ideas that are indirectly related to the instrument itself.
No need to inflate holivar (Is not that trolling?) However, what is it all. especially since everything had been said, and all are calm.
(Sorry for my english)
Not being complimentary towards Reason doesnt make someone a troll or lacking in sense.
As obnoxious as what I wrote might sound to you, and I get that, can you honestly explain how the risks and downsides I mention aren't a possibility?
I acknowledge that you are one of a small handful of top notch sound designers that really like and use Reason, but if criticism is so prevalent there just might be at least a tiny basis for it.
No, I agree that not liking Reason does not automatically qualify someone as a troll. :)
But, your first post seemed not arrogant, but elitist rather, In the same time enforcing a vision that I don't know if the developer even shares, it seemed a bit excessive to me. That is why I felt that you made it more a point of generalizing Reason users in general (I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I'm not saying that VST is any better either).
However, at the end of the day, I'd myself actually much prefer option 2: I.e. make a monophonic RE of just the bottom part of AALTO (even minus the reverb) and give it extensive connectivity on the backside instead.
Randy, if you DO decide to re-use code from AALTO and make a monophonic Rack Extension of the lower portion only, I have a request:
For modulation inputs on the back, use AUDIO connections as well as CV (or instead of). The Reason for this is that CV in Reason is only run at a 64th of the audio rate, so to support real audio rate modulation you need to use Audio I/O for that.
For the record. I don't think that such a device would even need patch storage (we have combi's for that). My opinion obviously.
This is not something I am looking at doing anytime soon, but I do appreciate the info.
The words of soulfmedia arre absurd, i don´t know if more for generalists or terribly arrogant.
I have used hardware in the past, BEFORE of to buy my first ever computer, when i was 30 years old. Since then i play almost always Reason for my music projects.
I am not a sound designer. I am a musician. An electronic musician. It has a part of sound designer. But my sound is designed through the mix beyond that like isolated sounds.
Both are different works in the electronic music, which can be linked, more or less.
Experience tells me that the platform, aka instrument, to do music is the less important, however. The really important is the own music, and the musician making it knowing the best of his/her instrument.
In your arrogant generalization, despite that you have tried to hide the hate of your words with lies, there is the sickening ignorance of the hater.
In fact it should give equal to you if this instrument is made or not in RE format, because it shouldn´t be your problem. Since the moment in which it is a problem for you, i can see your failure. I think that you are not capable to do music with nor Reason or anything.
My theory is that there are many people unable to do anything musically or even artistically decent within Reason, and they use other platforms to their creations, and still doesn´t do anything worthy. But criticizing Reason, instead of leveraging your time doing something, relieve you of your own nothingness ...
Please, try to do more music, and to write less.
