ForumsSoftware ← Aalto 1.3 UI feedback

I'm excited about the new features in 1.3, it's pretty much all that I could have expected, plus a lot more that I didn't expect. So I hate to complain. But... that gradient in the background makes some controls harder to see than others. The contrast changes vertically and the UI seems much less unified and cohesive.

Is there any way to go back to the flat look of the previous versions? The previous UI was really nice and this change is for the worse, in my opinion. I think it was good to increase the contrast and color intensity on the controls, but the background gradient makes this improvement less noticeable depending on where in the UI a control is located.

I've opened the Aalto package on Mac OS X but the resource files seem to be inaccessible, or I'd just change it keep my UI preferences to myself.

i agree about the gradient. otherwise everything else is beautiful! And this resizeable vector u.i. is amazing!! has to be the first vst i have seen with this feature.

I agree also. the old gui is more straight foreward, as it's less work for the eyes to check the parameters. also the old plain background is far more "classy looking" then the gradient one in 1.3..please, let us change to the old gui if we want. THX! great work between.

I think it is much better now, so I guess I am in the 'other' camp and would hate it to change back, but options are always great.

It doesn't seem to remember window size though ( Reaper win8 64bit )

Yeah the new version is great and I've been waiting so long for it (and it has been worth the wait), but I really prefer the flat minimal look of the old version. Felt a lot cleaner and slicker, things stood out more and it looked more like a legitimate piece of art than software.

I like the old colors more too and I remember the animations of modulations being more visible/less aliased, but I don't know if that's just something that depends on which size you have the window at.

I like it, the first thing I do though is scale it up

I can tone the gradient down a bit for you gradient haters.

FYI the original "flat" version has a gradient on it too. I just made it more obvious.

The dial buttons and toggle switch backgrounds are closer to the overall background color now because some people used to white backgrounds were confusing off (dark square on a light blue background) with on (white or other color on light blue background). So the "on" state now has lots more contrast away from the background than the off state, which is better.

A bit offtopic, but as a software developer I was wondering how the new vector-based UI was implemented, resp. which GUI-library was used?

I think the gradient was executed well.

I am having trouble with the scaling. When I drag from the lower right corner, the UI scales up, but the window does not. I am left with the same size window - but a cropped UI...

Aalto is written for Mac OS and Windows using JUCE. JUCE provides the low level drawing and interaction code on top of which I implement my own GUI components.

Strange to hear, because I also use Live 8 here and I have never seen this problem. I would try upgrading to Live 8.2.2 if you don't have that version.

love the new color palette though .. please don't change it. For some reason it reminds me of surfing in the 70's in Malibu or something, especially with plenty of patch cords visible (im not that old at all but that's the connection my mind makes).. Intentional or not, it is relevant to waves :)

Nice to see some discussion here (especially agreement, ha). Would like to see the gradient toned down in future releases. I did notice that the previous UI had a gradient but it was very subtle. The new one does make it somewhat harder to switch visual focus between controls. Kind of like reading this text:

I'm brand new to the synth so I've only seen the old UI in old YouTube news reels of yore but I like the new look. Not hard to see contrasts and sizeable is a great feature. Amazing synth!

Without claims to a new UI,
The only thing, might be a little add sharpness to fonts, at a time if done UI is smaller. Gradient and color IMO normal.

Hi Randy, fantastic update.

I found a Bug. Aalto doesn´t recall the GUI settings fine. I resize the GUI and / or check / uncheck the "num" / "anim" button. I close the VST window in Live. When I reopen the window Aalto steps back to the default GUI appearence.

Thx

OK, I toned the wave down for you guys.
