ForumsSoftware ← Sumu: no sound

From the outset I have an issue with no sound coming from Sumu. I load an instance of the AU or VST onto a track, select a preset and ensure a partial is loaded. When Sumu is triggered with midi no sound comes out.

Scrolling through presets and triggering with midi sometimes generates sound, but there is no consistency to this. I have ensured when testing that this is not an issue with keyboard stealing.

This is proving to be frustrating. A document with an instance of Sumu that is generating sound is saved and closed. On reopening the document, Sumu no longer generates sound.

I have sound, but with audio drop outs in ableton live. Vienna Ensemble can't load the interface and the plugin has induced kernel panics in my machine.

Sorry to hear. This is my first report of this. I test in Live Suite 12 all the time.

When Sumu is triggered with midi no sound comes out.

What if you switch to a patch that generates sound on its own? (Sumu machines / autoroute)

Do the red lights in the input module flash when there's MIDI input?

Does the sound cut off for the entire Live project, or just Sumu?

I'm trying to understand at what point the system is failing.

Vienna Ensemble can't load the interface and the plugin has induced kernel panics in my machine.

I will try Vienna Ensemble, hopefully this is fixed already.

I haven't seen any kernel panics here. If you are able to get a crash report of any kind, please send it to me via support@madronalabs.com .

Hello Randy,
thanks for the response. To answer your questions:

Do the red lights in the input module flash when there's MIDI input?
YES

Does the sound cut off for the entire Live project, or just Sumu?
SUMU ONLY. ALL OTHER TRACKS HAVE AUDIO PLAYBACK

I am sending you an email and a video clip via wetransfer of the issue in Live.

Also, I think your response to the comment in this thread:
'Vienna Ensemble can't load the interface and the plugin has induced kernel panics in my machine.'
Is part of another unrelated thread?

@simonkennedy I've just sent a reply to your email.

There's a question just above where @felipetellezost asks about Vienna Ensemble.

Same issue of no sound for some presets in Live 12 Suite, M2 Sonoma 14.5. They sometimes work then no sound at all. Usually happens when saving a project and recalling the project . On initiating Sumu again on the channel the preset does not sound. Ive tried AU and VST3. Same problem

Same problem here. I just installedSumu1.0.0b15 and it is way more buggy than the b13 version. It now doesn't work at all now in my DAW. I get a loud percussive spike when I load it as an AU in Logic Pro, and then no sound whatsoever. Clicking between different patches... again no sound. The b13 version was actually a lot better on my setup... at least I could get some sounds out of it.

It also crashed Logic Pro. I have emailed you the details and included the crash log.

My setup: iMac Pro, 3.2GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon W, macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina), 64GB RAM, Logic Pro 10.5.1, UA Apollo Twin X.

It also crashed Logic Pro. I have emailed you the details and included the crash log.

Thanks for the info, hopefully I'll track this down soon. I'll send you any follow up questions via the support email.

Hi everyone,

I have the same problem with Live 11.3.22 and Sumu 1.0.0.b15, no sound at all.

Thanks a lot,

Sacha

I'm trying to reproduce the no-sound issue but having no luck. Can someone break it down for me into a few steps that I can try? For example:

  • open Live 12
  • add a new Sumu
  • switch to patch "X"
  • save the Live project
  • close Live
  • open the project again

expected: playback of patch X
what happened instead: no sound.

Maybe it's a particular patch I'm not using. I'll keep trying here.

My experience is engage Sumu , go through the presets, some work some don't, meaning no sound. Finding a preset that works , save the project. On starting up that project again, no sound. It is sporadic, a preset may not work on first engagement then on second plugin engagement it works.

When there is no sound does the output scope freeze like this?

no sound

I tried very hard to reproduce this consistently and it's not happening. A single time, the sound engine locked up and the output scope was high as shown in the previous picture. I was all excited to dive in and fix but I can't get it to happen again.

Please, send any steps that lead to the issue consistently.

Also, if you are running into the problem, try making a brand new Sumu in a new Ableton project with the latest beta. Try saving and reloading. Can you get this to freeze? I'm thinking maybe, it was an old set of parameters in Ableton with a newer plugin version that's causing it.

I have downloaded the latest Sumo and tested in Live, OSX Native. Note a new Live version just came out. It seems to be ok now for me. I loaded 2 Sumu's on separate tracks, different presets, saved closed open, and it sounds ok.

That's good to hear. I think the "no sound" bug may be multiple issues. I have some things to fix for the next release coming soon.

Hi Randy, Unfortunately I jumped the gun. I'm still having instances when Sumu has no sound. RE: When there is no sound does the output scope freeze like this? - Yes.
It's very frustrating as Sumu cannot be used if on opening a saved project no sound is produced. Do you know what's causing it and if you have a fix?

I think it's several issues that can come up that may stop audio. I have fixed some things, so chances are good it will be better for you in the next release.

Made an account just to add that I have the exact same problem, no sound for most patches. Latest beta, Live 12, Sonoma 14.5. Love the sounds when it works, but unfortunately unusable as is.

Heard, this will be fixed in the next update very soon.

Hello. Bought Sumu late last night and tried it a little today. I can confirm that I’m having the same issues. Only every 5th patch or so results in sound. I’m on a Mac Studio M1 running Sonoma 14.5, Live 12, Live 12.0.10 as host. I figured it warranted mentioning just in case an update had been released but I’m guessing not yet.

Anyway, what I’ve heard of it so far sounds really fantastic!

Well I closed and reopened and now all seems ok? I’ll report back if I encounter the issue again but I just rifled through every preset and holy moly it sounds great. Thanks for the obvious extreme care that went into this.

hi Mitch, thanks for the good words and your patience. There's a bug that comes up randomly with the beta you downloaded, it stops sound sometimes, seemingly at random, on some setups. I am 99.9% sure it's fixed in the next release coming this week.

This sounds like what is happening again in NI hosts and Freestyle
