The window resizing should get remembered, so this sounds like a bug that may have popped up recently. Thanks for the report—I'll look into it.
Built-in MIDI mapping is something I will do in a future update. People keep asking me for it, so I know it's important to my customers, but doing it right will not be trivial.
Meanwhile I make sure MIDI mapping works well with the most popular DAWs, which are pretty much Ableton Live and Logic. I like Ableton's "configure" button approach to mapping.
The relationship between pitch, rate and your source sound in the granulator is kind of complex. Please check out the manual section on pitch vs. rate (pg. 13)
In general, you have to connect both the pitch from the KEY modules to both the pitch and rate inputs of the granulator to play in tune. And, the patcher output dials (sometimes called attenuverters around here) have to be at their default (double-click) settings.
Also if you have an oscillator sound without "wrap" on, you will get weird effects near the end.
If after some exploration you think you have really identified a bug, you can send me the patch w / audio file to support @ madronalabs.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll give this some attention in the next update. Kaivo allows a huge dynamic range, and obviously that's by design. But ideally you would never get "smacked" by it unexpectedly as you did.
Please let me know the particular presets, if you can find them again.
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I will give this some attention for the next update.
I added an XP workaround for the next update.
@uncle groove fixed: see your email.
Glad to hear it.
Sorry you are having troubles!
When the website was busy, I know for a fact some of the preset&samples downloads got corrupted. I would try downloading that installer again.
On second thought, you say you are moving the files though. So, maybe there is some other problem.
The installer should put them in c:(you)/AppData/Roaming/Madrona Labs/Kaivo/Samples. Could this be the wrong user? Administrator instead of yourself? Or vice versa?
This is not a problem. I should rename it to "notice" or something.
Hi,
Any CPU since 2006 or so, should have SSE 3. So for haj I know, the message is in error.
I will look at a fix ASAP.
Are you running Windows XP by any chance?
To be clear, you CAN load your own samples right now! You just have to do it by putting them into the Samples directory yourself outside the program. They are standard WAV files-- instructions are in the read_me_first file that came with your download.
Kaivo's noise generator and triggers allow much more precise patching of certain musical ideas than Aalto. I look forward to exploring this road!
Oh no posting patches is broken--- we added some horrible hack to the site so that Aalto patches would show up--- let me try to find that.
I'll leave it up for info, thanks.
Hi Joey,
Sorry the website wording is a bit confusing. There's not a sale now---$129 is the normal retail price. I just meant it's selling now. I don't plan to have a sale on Kaivo until the annual holiday sales time.
Somehow I missed this question entirely until now. Sorry for the delay, and always feel free to email me with questions.
Sounds like a bug. I'm going to be looking at the Soundplane integration again, so please keep in touch about this. Since I don't have one I'll need your help to sort out any Kyma issues!
Without hearing what's going on, my guess is, you are listening to a preset where the Body is mainly coming through only on one channel. This can depend on a lot of things like frequency content in the source, what kind of Body is being used and of course the panning settings.
I would try loading various factory patches (dulcimer a good start) and then try the nonlin. dial.
Hi Bodhi,
This is because I'm no longer making .aupreset files for the Audio Unit version. It uses the same .mlpreset files as the VST version now. I know this is kind of sad because a few menus in Mac apps such as this won't be filled in. But the costs of doing this outweighed the benefits, in my opinion, because I needed to write a preset converter and keep it updated, and the whole issue with two kinds of presets was confusing to many.
Hey it's the Kaivo beta thread! 1.0b1 is going out to folks on the beta list right now. The beta distribution is closed now, but feel free to discuss anything you like about it here.
If you made any audio you would like to share, please throw it on the Soundcloud group and post a link here. I wish we could embed Soundcloud content here, but we can't. You can embed text links using Markdown---the syntax for that is described here.
Hi,
Aalto is not an application, it is a plugin in VST and AU formats. You will have to use it with a VST or Audio Unit host.
The plugin should be in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. To get here in the Finder, the path starts from "Computer" then "Macintosh HD" or whatever you have your system hard drive called.
best,
Randy
Hay guys, I'm having a blank moment, how do I use ENV 1 and 2?
You put a trigger into them, from the KEY gate, SEQ gate, or any old place (any signal can be used as a trigger, env will trigger when it crosses 0 going up)
OK, I'll get on this ASAP.
So, the Soundplane deals with notes as opposed to scales. Notes you can think of as whole numbers like MIDI. 60 for C, 62 for D, etc. Synths like Aalto, Kaivo and so on can map this data to scales, which might be equal-tempered, a gamelan tuning, or whatever. You can add your own scales here by making a Scala .scl file.
The Soundplane doesn't have a concept of tuning, it just sends notes. These notes can be in patterns besides chromatic, like penatonic, dorian, etc. I think this setup gives the needed flexibility while giving easy performance controls on the Soundplane.
Great to hear, thanks for the update!
I just looked into this, and verified that the preset converter is broken in Aalto 1.5. I'll fix this as soon as I can. With the Kaivo update coming out this week, it won't be right away. Thanks for your understanding.
Yes I still plan to add it.
This past weekend I took a good long look at Kaivo and made the decision to push the release date back to early February. Kaivo is making some great sounds right now, but there are just too many raw edges left to call it done next week. I only get one chance to make a first impression with a new instrument and this one needs some more spit and polish before I can send it out for review.
This month will give me a chance to do some very important work, like tuning parameters so that Kaivo is easy to program, and making great presets. Maybe even getting the manual written!
I know some of you had hopes of playing with it over the holidays. So, sorry to disappoint. I'm just one guy that writes these things for the most part and, even after 20 years of doing this for a living, estimating when software will be done is still a task I am horrible at.
Stay tuned for sound examples and such coming soon. I wish you all a relaxing holiday season in the company of friends and family.
Check the Reaper docs to see about Reaper's MIDI learn capability. Using the host's MIDI learn has the advantage of working with any plugin. Aalto does not have internal MIDI learn.
This is actually by design. On Retina displays, especially in Logic, the graphics were sometimes causing the audio to choke previously, so now I made sure they stay out of the way.
In a future release I would like to move to a completely OpenGL-based UI, which will be very speedy again.
Hi,
There have been some people reporting problems with the preset install. Rather than use the installer, you can get a zip file of the presets from
http://www.madronalabs.com/media/aalto/demo/Aalto%20Presets.zip
Unpack this to get the "Aalto" directory and put that into in ~/Library/Audio/Presets/Madrona Labs (Mac OS) or /AppData/Roaming/Madrona Labs (Windows).
Sorry for the hassle.
Great stuff!!!
