Sumu preset selection

Is there a dropdown preset and partials maps menu selections in Sumu?

If yes, the drop down menus for presets and partials maps are not available to me. I have to control click (Mac) to see the menus.

When I click on the preset name it toggles/scrolls to the next preset. No drop down menu appears as it does in other instruments such as Aalto.

I cannot find any reference to how presets / waveforms are selected in the manual. Am I missing something obvious?

Organising user created partials maps

How do I organise the imported user partials maps in the menu? Can I create a user folder so they are discrete from the other maps?

The ones I have imported are located in the partials maps menus that happen to be selected when I import the map.

Hi Simon did you not get my reply to your support email? I replied a few days ago. I'll copy it here:

This is what's intended: that you have to control-click, (or two-finger click on your trackpad) and then they appear. Does that not seem right?

(Since my original reply, other people have been confused also, so I'm pretty certain I will change the menus to come up with a single click in the future)

The manual needs some work, but we thought some manual at this point was better than none.

When you import a partials folder, it imports the whole directory tree underneath the one you pick, including any folders that contain .utu files.

So if I have on my disk
~/VutuFiles/Strings/cello.utu
~/VutuFiles/Strings/viol.utu
~/VutuFiles/Noises/tinkle.utu
~/VutuFiles/Noises/harsh/blender.utu

and then bring up the import dialog (partials/...) and select the folder ~/VutuFiles to import,

the files
~/Music/Madrona Labs/Sumu/Partials/Strings/cello.sumu
~/Music/Madrona Labs/Sumu/Partials/Strings/cello.sumu
~/Music/Madrona Labs/Sumu/Partials/Noises/tinkle.sumu
~/Music/Madrona Labs/Sumu/Partials/Noises/harsh/blender.sumu

will be created, along with the directories on the way.

Importing again will (for now) overwrite these files.

The intention is to "sync" your entire partials development folder at once.

I think it's okay to have the two finger gesture, but I'd really like it if there was an arrow or something that let you see the list just by clicking regularly. Kinda throws me off.

Hello Randy, your reply to my email did not make it through. Thank you for your response in the forum to both questions. Much appreciated!

Heard! Thanks for the feedback.

Hovering over the selection box and switching presets with the mouse wheel is an excellent feature. Love it!

Ohhhhhhhhh, i see now. I was having trouble importing .utu files, but I didn't think to try right-clicking the partials menu. Now that I've also tried the directory trick I can see that my previous imports are also there, just top-level, and also my new directory is there.

Where are the Sumu partials stored? I'd love to clean house a bit and remove the redundant sounds I imported...

Where are the Sumu partials stored?

~/Music/Madrona Labs/Sumu/Partials.

One other thing... I know I completely missed the "Beta testers" offer in your Early Access 3 announcement. If you happen to need any more, I would love to be among them!

I'll send out another Discord signup link in the next newsletter.

Yeah.. I tried the invite link in The current newletter and I just get an "Invalid Invite" message. Hey... and I just noticed one silly observation: the title of this forum: "Forums ← Software ← Sumo preset and partials maps menu selection "Forums ← Software ← Sumo preset and partials maps menu selection". Sumo as in Typo? or chubby wrestlers? just wondered.

Regarding importing partials, you write:

When you import a partials folder, it imports the whole directory tree underneath the one you pick, including any folders that contain .utu files.

I am trying to import a folder but it seems only the files are imported.

Example: I have a folder and 3 files:

VutuFiles/part1.utu
VutuFiles/part2.utu
VutuFiles/part3.utu

I import the VutuFiles.

In Sumu/Partials I see the factory folders and

part1.sumu
part2.sumu
part3.sumu

but no the VutuFiles folder.

I wonder if this is a bug og user error?
Sumu 1.0.0 (AU, Arm) in Logic Pro 11.1
MacBook Air M1, 2020 - MacOS 15.1.1

This is working as intended. It has caused confusion though, so I either need to change the way it works or explain it better.

Another way to explain it is: choose your Vutu partials folder to import. All the Sumu partials files in the directory Sumu/Partials and its subdirectories will be replaced with the partials files in the folder you select and its subdirectories.

So, the assumption is you have a directory of utu files (possibly with subdirectories) you have orgainzed somewhere, and you're picking the root of that tree.

Ok, I get it now but I also get why it causes confusion.
I would assume the partial files are "ready" in Vutu or in other words, you would export the .sumu files from Vutu rather than importing them in Sumu. Does it make sense?

Funny, how Das Glitch makes the same error importing the file in this YouTube video at 19:25

https://youtu.be/Nnc8nxMk9Wg?feature=shared&t=1165

Clearly it's counterintuitive. I'll have a rethink.

Vutu export .wav or .utu files.

But Sumu seems to need .sumu files as a source.
How do I export .sumu files from Vutu?

We can't figure it out

@chabb

Click on the three dots at the top right of the Partials section of Sumu. Select 'import folder'
and navigate to the folder where your .utu files are located. Sumu will convert the .utu files to .sumu files which are then available for selection in the Partials load menu.

OK, but having manipulated all these folders and files, I lost the link and tree structure to all the .sumu files in the original bank. And several partial folders have been created one inside the other, making for total chaos. How do I get back the normal link to the original bank? Which folder should I import into Sumu? Where to place this destination folder for .utu analyses? The manual is really unclear on this question, and the protocol between Vutu and Sumu is complex or a source of error if you don't understand how to proceed correctly. Please simplify this, or explain it better.

Thanks

That is good as I can do, as far as explaining the way it works now. I've agreed that it's counterintuitive so will be changing the way it works in the future. But right now I'm fixing a couple of bugs that are more critical. Meanwhile, thanks for your patience.
