If you do end up making it bigger I'd love to be included.
Any idea yet how deep is the module going to be?
Had a chance to play with this new driver for a few hours last night. Great job! It feels amazing compared to the old one, especially the bottom and top rows. I've always had some issues with ghost notes on the far right of my board too and that seems to be no more.
Only issue so far was the surface being extra noisy, but after playing for a bit and re-calibrating the carriers a few times it calmed down.
Very happy right now, I expect to be playing a lot more sndpln in the near future.
I'm going to have to try this out! I've been meaning to check out Oscillot for a while and see how it sounds. Soundplane integration makes it even more appealing. Max4Live makes me happy.
I figure that some people around here will be interested in this performance I did for the Computer Music Seminar course at UVic. The first and last videos are me with the Soundplane.
In a heart beat!
On 10.10 I'm getting a bug when the
Application Support/Madrona Labs folder is empty. After the app finishes selecting the carriers it crashes the moment I hit okay. Got around this by running 1.2.4 first before opening 1.2.5.
a) I also primarily use it as a playing surface, but I'm trying too start using it as a control surface.
b) My preferred layout is rows 4ths because it lets me reuse some of my experience from Guitar/Bass etc.
c) In a band situation I mostly use it as a single note lead or possibly bass sound. I'm also working on a 3 voice arrangement of the 5th movement from Quatuor pour la fin du temps. I'm not a fan of the sound of closed position triads in the left hand, so I tend to stick to 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, or 6ths depending on the harmonies I'm playing and what the right hand is doing. I haven't experimented with closed position triads much in the right hand so no comment there.
I also really enjoy pairs 10ths played with each hand, for example a major 9th chord could be played like:
+3rd |-r---1 |------ 4------ r
-3rd -|-r--3 -|----- 1r----- 8va
d) I find playing multiple voices at the same time quite challenging, especially when the voices are not legato. I think the Bach inventions are a good example of something that is possible with enough practise, but really hard to actually play.
e) See my bit about major 9ths. I also really enjoy pretending I'm a Theremin or Ondes Martenot. Using the Soundplane to control ambient soundscapes and do design work feels so good.
The Eigenharp looks super cool. I play reeds so breath controllers are super appealing to me, how does the Eigenharp feel to play?
I'm planning on starting a modular this summer. If you end up making this module there is 100% chance I will buy it (and the expander), Echoing everyone else, the ability to use my soundplane without using my computer is very appealing. Part of the reason my soundplane has been sitting mostly unused for the last year is because I'm too lazy to boot up Ableton and plug everything into my computer.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience using custom zones combined with OSCulator to control Aalto as well as whatever else via OSC.
The most recent soundplane drive seems to refuse to connect to any port that isn't 3123, but using an 1.2 I have it sending to 3125 and OSCulator seems to be receiving the soundplane data fine. I'm then forwarding several of the messages to Aalto via port 3123 specifically:
Aalto says it is t3d connected, but doesn't seem to receive any notes.
I've tried with Aalto 1.6.0 and 1.6.1.
Should have just gone with max to start with! I'm just forwarding everything from max to port 3124 and getting the behaviour I'm looking for.
I mentioned earlier that I was thinking of trying to hack that into the app, but ideally I could just get something working another way.
The only reason I have avoided max from the outset is that I was having some weird OSC binding problems, but I'll make sure I'm using some port other than 3123 and see if I have better luck than I've been having with OSCulator.
I see, my setup would ideally be slightly different. My plan would be to have a portion of the Soundplane control space setup to control parameters on several sequencers + some Ableton parameters, and a small portion setup to control a single instance of Aalto.
Hey Randy, with sndpln 1.1.2 and Aalto 1.6.1 I'm still having the same problem as above. I'm curious what your multi-Aalto setup looks like software wise.
I'm pretty confident the last combination I was using was client 1.2 and Aalto 1.6.1. In my frustration it is possible I was using 1.6.0 still though.
I have a performance in less than a week, so if you could link me a git patch for 1.2.4 I'll grab all the libs I need and compile me a new version of the software.
Worst case I'll see if I can figure out how to hardcode it so that it just always sends ports 3123 and 3124.
Using OSC data monitor to watch port 3123 I can confirm that all the same messages are getting sent to port 3123 regardless of whether I'm sending directly from the Soundplane app on 3123 or through OSCulator.

Hey, I was just playing around with Aalto, and I was wondering, have you have considered allowing a negative coefficient on the feedback?
When the feed back loop is positive there is a tendency towards having both even and odd harmonics. When the coefficient is negative there is mostly even harmonics.
You can force it to be negative already, but you have to used to sequencer to do so. It would be nice to have both.
I'll post a patch in a second.
It's great to see exode around here. I second even just having a monophonic version of the base synthesis components with CV and IO. The rest could be made up with other reason devices.
Clearly this wouldn't be as playable as Aalto, but there isn't really anything else like it within reason for sound generation.
Congratulations! I hope I can get in on the next bunch of soundplanes you do, they look amazing.
I'd just like to thank you for your presentation at uvic today. You've been a bit of a hero of mine since I found out about Aalto, and playing a bit with the soundplane today was a great experience. I'm a bit shy in person, so I thought I'd wish you luck here so that I might be able to afford to purchase one in a year or two or three when I've finally graduated and drop some money on this amazing controller.
