ForumsSoftware ← Aalto unusable due to high CPU usage.

Hi,

something strange is happening.

I recently upgraded my macbook from a late 2008 to an early 2015 model with I5 2.9ghz, 8gb ram, SSD, OSX 10.10.5, etc.

I installed Ableton 9.5 64bit and proceeded to install Aalto 1.7 64bit.

When I load the plugin on an existing project and start patching stuff, the CPU usage rises from a 15% to 45-50% and I get audio stutters and pops which are making it unusable.

This never happened with my older (and much less powerful) macbook before. So I'm wondering what the cause of this is. Is this a common problem with version 1.7?

I miss being able to use Aalto. :(

Well, that is strange. This is a new one for me—I can't think of why it would be heavier on the CPU on a newer computer, other things being equal.

What is the Buffer Size you have set in Live's preferences?

If you close the plugin window, does the CPU use change?

What if you make a new project and put a fresh Aalto in it? Do you get the same problem? If not, maybe it's something in the settings of the project.

Hi Randy,

buffer size is 512. Same as with the old computer.
CPU usage stays the same with the plugin window closed.

But something even weirder has happened now that I was testing to reply to you.
It suddenly works properly. CPU usage is still as high when using complex patches but the audio issues are not happening.

The last 2 times I ran into the problem I described before... Strange.

I'll keep you updated if I ever run into trouble anymore.

Thanks.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ OK, glad it's working.

Althought 45% it is quite a much indeed (for 1 voice ?), but Aalto never been a lightweight for cpu, in my system Aalto looks like that (in default state, GUI close):
At voices amount 1 - 12-13%, 2 - 20-22%, 3 - 29-30%, 4 - 37-38% (all results - for one of core of CPU (quad), ofcourse).
Windows 7, Studio One v2 64bit, buffer size 256

Added: But btw just now when make cpu test, noticed some strange behavior, when at 4 voices cpu show the same amount as at 3 - about 28% (Aalto just was inactive, in the backgrounds in daw), i could not understand what the reason, interesting. But such trick i could not repeat with 1 voice, unfortunately :D
It will be necessary then to explore it better.

FIXED BECAUSE STUPID: I didn't notice my buffer size was on super low. I put it at 512 and things are smooth as butter. Sorry for the false alarm - great plugins!

Hi,

I hope this is good enough etiquette, but I'm having the same problem as refracted so I figured i would add a comment here rather than start a new topic. I have an early 2015 macbook pro, 2.7 GHz intel core i5, and 8 GB of RAM, and Aalto and Kaivo are running CRAZY high CPU surges on my computer and the audio crackles constantly while I play the instrument. Just loading them up, the default patch for both of them instantly jolt the CPU meter to 35-45%. On a Kaivo percussion patch I'm getting up to 74% r. I know these are cpu-heavy plugins, but that's ridiculous!! I demoed these about 5 months ago and had no cpu problems at all, only reaching extreme highs when I when doing polyphonic stuff with them, and I finally decided to purchase them with the winter sale going on, and i can't use them at all. Is there any way at all to fix this, even a little bit?
